Registering to Vote

General Information

Who can register

To register in Wyoming you must:

• be a citizen of the United States
• be 18 years old by General Election Day
• be a resident of the State of Wyoming
• not be currently adjudicated mentally incompetent
• not have been convicted of a felony, or if convicted have had your voting rights restored

Note that you must re-register to vote if you did not vote in the last general election.

How to register

1. Use our Register to Vote form below to fill out the National Voter Registration Form.
2. Sign and date your form. This is very important!
3. Mail or hand-deliver your completed form to the address we provide.
4. Make sure you register before the voter registration deadline.

Election Day registration
If you have missed the voter registration deadline, you can still register to vote and a cast a ballot at the same time during early voting or on Election Day. Simply go to your regular polling place or early voting site to register and vote. Contact your Local Election Office for questions about the process or identification requirements.

Overseas and Military Voting

You are a Military or Overseas voter if you are in uniformed services, living overseas OR a spouse or dependent of a uniformed services voter. To get registered and vote, you can utilize Overseas Vote Foundation.

Voting with Disabilities

Voters with disabilities have the opportunity to vote privately and independently becasue each polling place is equipped with a voting machine that allows the voter to listen to the ballot and make selection using a key pad.

In addition, assistance for disabled voters is given at the poll when requested. If you have a disability you may also vote by absentee ballot. Any qualified elector may request a ballot be mailed to another qualified elector.

Early Voting

In person absentee voting takes place at the county clerk office 40 days before an election. It is not available on election day.

Absentee ballot rules

Any registered Wyoming voter may apply for an absentee ballot and vote by mail.

How to get Absentee ballot

1. Use our Absentee Ballot Form below to prepare your application.
2. Sign and date the form. This is very important!
3. Return your completed application to your Local Election Office as soon as possible. We’ll provide the mailing address for you.
4. All Local Election Offices will accept mailed or hand-delivered forms. If it’s close to the deadline, call and see if your Local Election Office will let you fax or email the application.
5. Make sure your application is received by the deadline. Your application must actually arrive by this time — simply being postmarked by the deadline is insufficient.
6. Please contact your Local Election Office if you have any further questions about the exact process.

What to do next

1. Once you receive the ballot, carefully read and follow the instructions.
2. Sign and date where indicated.
3. Mail your voted ballot back to the address indicated on the return envelope.
4. Your voted ballot must arrive by the deadline or it will not be counted.

Polling place hours of operation are from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.
Poll Worker Information

In order to be a poll worker in Wyoming, you must:

• Be registered to vote in Wyoming
• Be at least 18 years of age
• Be entitled to compensation
• Political affiliation generally required
• Be a resident of the county
• Complete required training
• Be physically, morally and mentally competent
• Students who are 16 years or older may be appointed if they meet all other voter requirements

Secretary of State

Edward A. Buchanan was appointed Wyoming’s 22nd Secretary of State by Governor Mead on March 1, 2018. Secretary Buchanan serves as the State’s Chief Elections Officer, Securities Commissioner, Corporations Administrator, and Notaries Public Commissioner. Additionally, he chairs the State Canvassing Board and serves with Wyoming’s other statewide elected officials on the State Loan and Investment Board, the Board of Land Commissioners and the State Building Commission.

Secretary Buchanan grew up in Goshen County, Wyoming on his family’s farm and ranch on Rawhide Creek. After graduating from the University of Wyoming with a bachelor’s degree in political science, he was commissioned in the United States Air Force and served as an intelligence briefer to senior command. While in uniform, he received a master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Colorado. Upon his return to civilian life, Ed attended the University Of Wyoming College Of Law where he was awarded a place on the Board of Advocates. Ed returned to Goshen County upon graduation, where he established and grew a successful law practice in Torrington.

In 2002, Ed was elected to the Wyoming House of Representatives and represented Goshen County for ten years while continuing to run his law practice in Torrington. During this tenure in the legislature he served as Chairman of Judiciary, Majority Floor Leader and as Speaker of the House. Secretary Buchanan enjoys spending time with his wife and four children and he remains actively involved in his community. On free weekends he enjoys flying across the skies of Wyoming as a licensed pilot.
